 COMMON NAME: Hydrangea

If deep purple/blue is what you are looking for in a Bigleaf Hydrangea you have to check out Wee Bit Grumpy! The extra-large, full blooms take on a deep, violet red shade in acidic soil with aluminum present. This is one of the deepest blues we have seen. Wee Bit Grumpy Hydrangea is a compact hydrangea standing 24 inches tall and 30 inches wide. The deep, glossy green foliage is a perfect backdrop for the bold blooms. This reblooming hydrangea blooms early summer off the previous season’s growth and reblooms later in the summer off the new growth. Planted in full sun to part shade locations, Wee Bit Grumpy Hydrangea likes fertile soil and regular watering. Planted as a border, specimen, or in a perennial garden, the deep color shades are sure to please.

Maintenance Notes:

Mid-Spring: Prune out any dead wood from all varieties. Check soil pH and adjust up or down if needed for desired flower color. Feed plants with a fertilizer high in phosphorus (such as 15-30-15) to encourage blooms. Complete any transplanting before the leaves unfurl. Mulch plants after the soil has warmed to conserve moisture and buffer soil temperatures. Watch for powdery mildew and treat as needed.

Fall: Remove and destroy any fallen foliage that was infected by powdery mildew. In Zone 5, cover the stems with a 12” layer of organic material such as straw or mulched leaves to help flower buds overwinter. You may also wrap your Hydrangea with burlap to protect it from winds and cold temperatures.
